Rick Herring, Class of 1978, has been named the Southern Columbia Area School District's 2015 Distinguished Alumnus recipient. After graduating from Southern Columbia Area High School, Rick attended Albright College earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. He completed graduate-level work at Fairleigh Dickinson University earning a Master’s in Business Administration in Finance. He is also a Certified Public Accountant. Rick turned his interest in business and finance into a long and successful career that culminated with his hiring as President of Giant Food Stores.  Rick’s first job at Giant came in 1989, working in the retailer's auditing department. In 1996, he was named vice president and controller for Giant/Carlisle before taking on the role of vice-president of Giant’s parent company, Ahold Financial Services in 2001. He returned to Carlisle in 2003 as Chief Financial Officer for Giant Food Stores. In that role he was responsible for all financial operations, including governance, acquisitions, accounting, and reporting. He was named President of Giant Food Stores in 2009, and remained in that role until his retirement in 2014. As president of Giant Food Stores he was he was responsible for managing over $7 billion in sales, operating 200 supermarkets, and employing 33,000 associates across  Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.
 
Mr. Herring was nominated for this award because of his "tireless commitment to his company and family which have led to his success in business and established him as an admired community leader."  Rick will be recognized at Sunday's commencement exercises and he will also be one of the featured speakers. The graduation ceremony for the Class of 2015 will be held Sunday, June 7, 2015, beginning at 2:00 P.M. in Haas Auditorium on the campus of Bloomsburg University.
