Congratulations to Alexis Burd, Class of 2017, who attended the November 16th Board of Education meeting as Southern Columbia Area's first-ever, Student Representative to the Board of Education. This position was recently created by the Board as a means to "support and encourage a student voice in matters brought before the Board." Student Representatives to the Board of Education speak to the interests of all Southern Columbia Area students and serve in an advisory capacity. Alexis will be attending monthly meetings through June of her graduation year. In addition to representing the interests of all K-12 students, Alexis will be reporting on school news and events. Good luck Alexis!

Congratulations are also extended to Board of Education members Mike Yeager, Tim Vought, and John Yocum who were recognized by the Pennsylvania School Boards Association for long-term service. Since 1983, PSBA has been honoring long-term school directors for their volunteer service to local communites. School board members are recognized when they reach 8, 12, 16, 20, 24, etc. years of service on a local school board. Mr. Yeager has served as a Southern Columbia Area School District Board member for twelve years, with Mr. Vought and Mr. Yocum each serving eight years. All three directors were presented certificates of appreciation and were added to PSBA's Honor Roll of School Board Service. According to the PSBA, the certificate, "in a modest way, attempts to recognize their years of dedicated service to children, the community and public education."

The directors also accepted the resignation of fellow school board member Charlene Cove. Mrs. Cove was thanked for her tireless service to the District and for her strong support of music education and the arts.  Residents of the Southern Columbia Area School District interested in applying for this vacant seat can do so by submitting a letter of interest and resume to Board Secretary Tresa Britch. This information can be e-mailed to Mrs. Britch at tbritch@scasd.us, dropped off at the District Office, or mailed to her attention at 800 Southern Drive, Catawissa, Pa. 17820. The application deadline is Friday, November 27, 2015.
