Practice For Fall Activities Underway

 

Southern Columbia Area's student-athletes, musicians and cheerleaders "unofficially" kicked off the 2014-2015, school year with the start of "official" practice on Monday, August 11th. We wish these hard-working students and their coaches and advisors much success during the upcoming Fall season!  

"Good Reading" to Prepare for the New School Year

The Principals and their staff were busy throughout the summer creating student schedules and completing other tasks needed to prepare their schools for the new school year. Among these tasks were making revisions and updates to the student handbooks. School Board Vacancy - Region II (Catawissa Borough/Catawissa Township)

If you are 18 years of age and are a resident of Catawissa Borough or Catawissa Township and would like to serve as a member of the Southern Columbia Area School District Board of Directors, please contact Tresa Britch, Board Secretary at 570-356-3509 or tbritch@scasd.us.  The Board of Directors meets regularly on the 2nd and 3rd Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m., with the exception of July and December when only one meeting is scheduled per month.  This is a great opportunity to serve your school district and

District's Special Education Plan is PDE Approved

The Pennsylvania Department of Education recently notified the District that its Special Education Plan for 2014-2017, has been approved. Many thanks are extended to Jennifer Snyder, Supervisor of Special Education, and the Planning Committee, for their diligence in putting together such a sound, comprehensive plan. Congratulations are extended to Ryan Matukaitis, Sunny Sen, and Allen Potter on capturing First Place in Management Information Systems competition held at the Future Business Leaders of America National Leadership

Energy Savings Project in Full Swing

If you have driven by Southern Columbia Area's School District's campus recently, you may have noticed a bevy of activity related to the Guaranteed Energy Savings Project approved by the Board of Education this past spring. The project will net the District over $4 million in energy savings over the next twenty years while allowing it to make much needed facility repairs. Headed by the McClure Company, the project includes districtwide lighting upgrades, "plug load" management, building envelope upgrades, HVAC upgrades and roofing upgrades.

Pay-to-Participate Forms Have Been Mailed

On April 14, 2014, the Southern Columbia Area School District Board of Education approved policy 123.1 which authorizes the implementation of a Pay-to-Participate fee. On July 1st, payment forms were mailed to the families of all students in grades 7 to 12.

Wishing all students and staff a safe, happy and much deserved summer break! Classes for the 2014-2015, school year will begin Tuesday, August 26th. Until then, enjoy your vacation!

Summer Office Hours

All District offices are staffed throughout the summer should you need to contact your child's school. The offices are open to the public, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 AM until 2:00 PM. 

Pickleball Tournament Marks Fun End to a Productive School Year

The Seventh Annual Pickleball Tournament sponsored by the District's Physical Education Department featured many hotly contested games in each of its three brackets. According to Physical Education Teacher Claire Campbell a record number of students signed up for the 2014 competition which fielded 86 teams. "Games were played during activity periods, study halls and even lunch periods so we could conclude play before the end of the year," stated Mrs.
