Free Developmental Screening

Children, ages three or four are invited to “Come To School” at the Southern Columbia Area School District's G.C. Hartman Elementary Center, on Wednesday, October 29, 2014.  There will be a free developmental screening.  Children will participate in activities that will test their hearing, speech, vision, gross and fine motor skills, personal and social skills, adaptive behavior,cognitive skills, and height and weight.

Fresh Food of the Month Initiative Returns September 24th

Southern Columbia Area School District will provide its students with local food from area farms as part of the National Farm to School program. Once a month, beginning Wednesday, September 24th, the school cafeteria will offer fresh produce from local farms. The Farm to School program connects school districts and local farms to serve healthy meals in the cafeteria, improve student nutrition, and support local farmers.

New Middle School Principal Named!

Congratulations are extended to Mr. William Callahan who was appointed as Middle School Principal at the September 15th Board of Education meeting. Mr. Callahan is presently an Assistant Middle School/High School Principal with the Shamokin Area School District, serving in that role since 2004. Mr. Callahan's staff at Shamokin Area describe him as "firm but fair" and as someone "who listens to and respects other's voices and opinions."  He is also recognized as an "administrator who can connect with students." SCA Bids Farewell to Middle School Principal

Best wishes are extended to exiting Middle School Principal Angela Farronato in her new role as an elementary principal in the Shikellamy Area School District. Mrs. Farronato will assume her new duties on Monday, September 15th. We thank Mrs. Farronato for her tireless service to SCA and its Middle School students! Southern Columbia Area's search for a new Middle School Principal is nearing an end with a new principal expected to be named in the coming weeks.

Remembering the Lessons of 9/11

Today we pause to remember the 2,977 people who perished in the horrific terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The victims included heroic Americans- firemen, policemen, and other first responders, as well as private citizens- who rushed into dangerous situations to aid those who were endangered by the attacks. September 11th is a day that forever changed the United States.

G.C. Hartman Students and Staff Show School Spirit!

On September 10th, G.C. Hartman Elementary students and staff demonstrated their school spirit by participating in "Wacky Wednesday."  Participants had fun wearing colorful outfits and mismatched or backwards clothing while engaging in the day's regular activities and classroom lessons. Elementary Guidance Counselor Eric Deeter stated a goal of Wacky Wednesday is to "show that G.C.

Laptop "1:1" Program Presentation -Wed. Evening for 8th-12th Graders

8th - 12th grade students (& 7th graders in Algebra I) and parents/guardians are invited to join our technology staff and administration Wednesday evening during the MS-HS "Back To School Night" for one of two short presentations which will provide information about our "1:1" (one-to-one) laptop initiative. The presentations will be held in the HS Auditorium, and start promptly at 6:00pm and 7:30pm.

Student Achievement
We were pleased with the results of our efforts last year as PSSA and Keystone data released this summer showed significant improvement in student achievement. We look to build on this progress. PSSA Math: 3rd Grade 10.2% gain, 5th Grade 12.4% gain; PSSA  Reading: 3rd Grade 8.2% gain, 4th Grade 11% gain, 6th Grade 7.4% gain;  PSSA Writing: 5th Grade 25% gain!; Keystone Exams: All Algebra I students in grades 6-11 made a 13.4% gain, Biology 15.4% gain, Literature 5.1% gain.
