PSSA Idol Entertains and Inspires!

Each year, G.C. Hartman Elementary Center kicks off the statewide assessments with a fun-filled and highly-entertaining variety show which features the school's teachers and staff as the main acts! The PSSA Idol is modeled after the TV show American Idol and features musical acts and test-taking tips delivered by staff members to third and fourth grade students.

SCA Artists Recognized for Excellence

Southern Columbia artists, all members of the Class of 2019, were named winners in several categories, including the top prize, at the 41st Annual Scholastic Arts Exhibit sponsored by the Packwood House Museum in Lewisburg.

National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day

Today is National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day and May is Mental Health Awareness month. All students and staff are encouraged to wear green today (the ribbon color for Mental Health Awareness is green).  As part of this day, the District is also holding a Staff Dress Down Day with the proceeds going to the McDowell Institute at Bloomsburg University which provides low cost mental health and suicide prevention training and education to our local communities and schools.

Erasing the Stigma of Mental Illness

On May 9th 2019, CMSU Behavioral Health, Southern Columbia, and all other schools across Columbia, Montour, Snyder and Union counties are uniting to support children’s mental health awareness by wearing green, the color of the children’s mental health support ribbon.

Students Interact with Renowned Animal Expert

Southern Columbia's Fifth Grade students recently had the opportunity to chat and ask questions to renowned primatologist and environmentalist Dr. Jane Goodall via Skype in the Classroom. On April 2nd, Dr. Goodall engaged the students in a live chat and Q & A session. Goodall is best known for her study of social and family interactions of wild chimpanzees.

Students in the News

Middle School student Ryter McCoog had a "voice at the table" during this past weekend's National School Boards Association National Conference held in Philadelphia. Ryter was a panelist in a workshop session entitled, Student Voices: How 6th Graders Define Digital Learning. Another Middle School student making the news is Michaela Williams.
