The April 16, 2001 Board Meeting of the Southern Columbia Area School District Board of Directors convened in the High School Library with President Craig Roadarmel in charge of the meeting.

 

         Pledge of Allegiance was said by all.

 

         President Roadarmel welcomed everyone followed by a roll call of Board Members:

AGENDA HEARING PERIOD

Mrs. Peggy Barbarito and Mrs. Cynthia Doby, Middle School English Teachers, made statements to the Board requesting their approval of the 21st Century Learning Grant.

 

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT

Dr. Wilcox reported on the Summer School program and passed out information concerning both the Summer School program and “Data Analysis – Spring 2001.  He further reported on the CTC stating we are in competition for grants to support the CTC program and he requested direction from the board regarding going forward with trying to get this grant money.  Seven of the nine board members present voted yes to going forward with applications for grant monies for this program.

 

Dr. Wilcox requested an Executive Session at 7:50 pm for personnel issues.  The Board reconvened at 8:50pm followed by a roll call of the Board.

            On a motion by Berger and second by Meyer, the Treasurers’ Reports were approved.  Motion carried by unanimous affirmative voice vote.

 

MINUTES – MINUTES AND INVOICES

On a motion by Yeager and second by Bittner, the Minutes of 03/06/01, 03/12/01, and 03/19/01 were approved.  Motion carried by unanimous affirmative voice vote.

On a motion by Kreischer and second by Porter, the General Fund Invoices in the amount of $866,131.46 were approved.  Motion carried by unanimous affirmative voice vote.

 

MINUTES – FISCAL

            On a motion by Berger and second by Atherton, budgetary transfers in the 2000-01 budget to ensure proper accounting (Exhibit A) were approved.  Motion carried by unanimous affirmative voice vote.

 

On a motion by Meyer and second by Atherton, the Southern Columbia Area School District tentative 2001-02 General Fund Budget in the amount of $11,752,462 was approved.  Motion carried by unanimous affirmative voice vote.

 

On a motion by Atherton and second by Berger, the motion to accept a 21st Century Learning Grant in the amount of $375,000.00 and to ratify the application therefore, was tabled.  Motion to table was carried by unanimous affirmative voice vote.

 

            On a motion by Kreischer and second by Hynoski, providing four (4) high school students with on-the-job clerical training in the district during the summer months at minimum wage (35 hours per week for approx. 9 weeks each) was approved.  Motion carried by unanimous affirmative voice vote.

 

            On a motion by Berger and second by Meyer, retaining Sweets, Stevens, Tucker, and Katz, Philadelphia, PA, for a special education matter, was approved.  Motion carried by unanimous affirmative voice vote.

 

ITEMS – PERSONNEL

            On a motion by Atherton and second by Berger, Denise Kreisher was approved for the position of Business Office Secretary, effective 05/01/01, at a salary of $9.05 per hour.  Motion carried by unanimous affirmative voice vote.

 

            On a motion by Atherton and second by Bittner, the resignation for retirement of Ruth A. Slonaker DeLong, effective at the end of the 2000-01 school year, was accepted with regret.  Mrs. DeLong has been a teacher at Southern for 33.54 years.  Motion carried by unanimous affirmative voice vote.

 

            On a motion by Kreischer and second by Berger, the resignation of Kevin A. Primerano from the position of Head Boys Soccer Coach, effective immediately, was accepted with regret.  Mr. Primerano has been in this position for 3 years.  Motion carried by unanimous affirmative voice vote.

 

ITEMS – POLICY AND PROGRAMS

            On a motion by Yeager and second by Bittner, the 2001-02 school year calendar (Exhibit B) was approved.  Motion carried by unanimous affirmative voice vote.

            On a motion by Meyer and second by Kreischer, an adjustment to the 2000-01 school year calendar to add the following days in June as “Snow Make-up Days” was approved:

Ø     Saturday, June 2, 2001 (Seniors Only)

Ø     Monday, June 4, 2001 (K-12)

Ø     Tuesday, June 5, 2001 (K-12) – Graduation Date

Ø     Wednesday, June 6, 2001 (K-11)

Motion carried by unanimous affirmative voice vote.

 

BOARD COMMENTS

Mr. Berger inquired whether security system was in place for “Black Friday,” and whether the new list of extensions could be passed along to board members.  Dr. Wilcox responded.

 

RECOGNITION OF THE PUBLIC

Comments from Mr. Clippinger concerning the Board possibly not approving the 21st Century Learning Grant.  Questions from Mike Lester, Press Enterprise.
