history class at a coal mining facility

Mr. Lindenmuth's Contemporary Issues class, as part of their Coal Region unit, went on a field trip to Blaschak Coal Mine Site in Centralia on Wednesday, April 26. They learned about surface mining for coal from Blaschak Superintendent Dale Lindenmuth. They had the opportunity to see the large equipment that runs the operation and the overall details of how companies mine for coal in the Northeast Anthracite coal region. Students also to got to take a tour with Mr. Joe Wayne in the Hibernian House in Girardville and learn about John Kehoe, the supposed leader of the famous Molly Maguires. It was a great trip that explored the rich culture and history of the coal region in our area.
