SCASD Parents of school-aged children under the age of 13.

For the Southern Columbia Area School District to provide your students with effective technology tools for learning the school district partners with several web based software companies that are not owned or operated by the school district.  The Microsoft Office 365 suite is the primary software suite used by SCASD students for school related activities along with several other educationally based online programs.

For SCASD students to use the software programs mentioned above there are times that the websites require personal information from the students.  Examples of the type of information required may be the student’s name and email address.

Following the guidelines of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) website companies must provide parental notification and obtain parental consent before collecting personal information from students under the age of 13.  The Federal COPPA law allows school districts to consent to the collection of personal information on behalf of all of its students.  With COPPA allowing school districts to consent it eliminates the need for direct parental consent given to the website.
