Students in Advanced Woodshop 2 are putting their woodworking skills to work by designing and building a custom wooden drying rack and storage holder for laboratory glassware in Ms. Charlton's science classroom.

Using the engineering design process, students are creating a durable, functional solution for safely drying and organizing beakers, test tubes, and other lab equipment. Throughout the project, they are applying advanced skills in measuring, cutting, joinery, and finishing while producing a professional-quality product with a real purpose.

By collaborating with a real client and addressing an authentic classroom need, students gain valuable experience in problem-solving, craftsmanship, and project design while supporting another academic program within our school.

Yesterday, high school students participated in the ThinkFast Interactive program, an engaging and fast-paced presentation focused on teen driver safety. As part of Southern Columbia’s commitment to expanding curriculum opportunities and providing students with engaging, hands-on learning experiences, nine staff members recently completed the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) Basic Archery Instructor Certification Course. This training will support integrating archery into the district’s curriculum through physical education, outdoor adventure courses, and select CTE experiences, while also creating opportunities for student participation in extracurricular clubs.

As student interest grows, the district hopes to develop competitive archery opportunities that will allow students to participate in regional and state NASP competitions while building focus, discipline, confidence, and sportsmanship.

As part of the Eels in the Classroom environmental education program, our Forestry and Wildlife students had the exciting opportunity to deliver American eels to Faith and Friends Preschool this week.

During their visit, high school students presented information about the American eel's life cycle, habitat, and migration journey, and led the preschoolers in a hands-on activity to construct their own eels.

Throughout the school year, both high school and preschool students will care for and learn about their eels, gaining hands-on experience with aquatic ecosystems and conservation. In May, the eels will be released into their natural habitat, completing this unique learning journey.

Dear Southern Columbia School Community,

The Student Support Team is proud to sponsor a Suicide Prevention Awareness T-Shirt Fundraiser in support of Southern Columbia's SAVE (Students Against Violence Everywhere) Club. This year's design is a more subtle, school spirit-inspired shirt that promotes the important message of hope, resilience, and mental wellness. Proceeds from all shirt sales will benefit our SAVE Club and help fund future student wellness initiatives, awareness activities, and events throughout the school year.

Although the shirts will not arrive until October 6, we still felt it was important to provide our school community with the opportunity to participate in this meaningful cause. Once the shirts arrive, we will announce a designated day in October for students and staff to wear them together in support of suicide prevention awareness and mental health.

To order a shirt, please visit:

https://www.customink.com/fundraising/suicide-prevention-t-shirts-soco?utm_campaign=desktop-post-launch-v3&utm_content=suicide-prevention-t shirtssoco&utm_medium=social&utm_source=copy-link

Thank you for supporting our students and helping us foster a culture of connection, kindness, and wellness at Southern Columbia. Together, we can make a difference and remind those around us that they are never alone.

Sincerely,

The Student Support Team Southern Columbia Area School District

Each year, Southern Columbia High School proudly honors our veterans through a special luncheon and assembly held on Veterans Day. A highlight of this celebration is our slideshow, which recognizes and pays tribute to all SCA alumni who have served or are currently serving in the military. Over the years, this presentation has grown tremendously, now honoring more than 150 veterans, spanning graduates from the Class of 1941 to the Class of 2025. This project has been many years in the making, and while it continues to grow, many of our slides have become outdated. To ensure that our tribute remains accurate and up to date, we are asking all SCA alumni who have served, or relatives of those who have served, to complete the form at the link below. This will help us keep our records current so we can continue to properly honor our SCA veterans.

Please fill out the form even if you (or your relative) are already included in our presentation. Upon completion of this survey, you will be contacted about submitting a photo.

If you have any questions, please contact Jerid Lindenmuth at jlindenmuth@scasd.us or Jennifer Stine at jenstine@scasd.us. Thank you for helping us continue this proud tradition of honoring the brave men and women who have served our country.
