The following students were chosen by Fifth Grade Staff at Southern Columbia Middle School as October SoCo Stars of the Month. These students were chosen because they have displayed self-control, tolerance, academic integrity, and resilience within the school setting. Congratulations to each student and their families!
October 2023: Britton Gum and Marlowe Schock
Friday was a music-filled night here in Tiger Nation! The Music Department had so many things to celebrate on Friday at the football game. First, we celebrated our three Seniors: Sophia Boucher, Ethan Rush, and Patrick Lobos. We then had the combined 5-12th Grade Choir and Alumni Choir, made up of 85 people, singing the National Anthem. Finally, we had a loud and proud alumni band night. We even had guest conductors helping our drum major, Saira Sodergren! We all had a blast. Thank you to everyone who came out.
Students who earned the 1st Marking Period celebration got the opportunity to participate in the “6th Grade 2023 Kickball Classic.” There were four teams that competed. In the end, it was Team Observation coming out with the championship over Team Metaphor. Team Fraction defeated Team Safety in the Third Place game. Pictured are the members of the championship team that won the title game by a close margin of 9-8. Congrats to Team Observation!
Over the next couple of months, we will be posting a feature called "Together We’re Tigers" in an effort to celebrate our wonderful faculty and staff. We are very fortunate to have these hard-working individuals serving our community. Here is our first group:

Six FBLA students attended the Kalahari State Leadership Workshop. Students had the opportunity to attend impactful workshops, learn more about competitive events, and network.

The Field Hockey team's service project this season involved raising money for the PA Breast Cancer Coalition. Money was raised by a T-shirt sale and bake sale. The final tally was $601.35. The team also participated in Trunk or Treat on Thursday.
Some spooky sights were seen around G.C. Hartman Elementary School last week. We saw witches and wizards, sleepy zombies in their pajamas, and a number of costumed characters seeking treats, not tricks. 🦇🎃👻
On Thursday evening, the Southern Columbia High School Student Council sponsored the 4th annual Trunk or Treat. Thank you to all of the clubs, groups, and sports teams that made it a huge success! This event was able to provide a fun and safe Halloween activity to over 600 kids! 🎃 👻

Some of the Bocce Ball players attended the Youth Summit in Lewisburg yesterday. The theme was “Join the Ride Unified.” The players teamed up to build their own roller coasters. They were judged on speed, height, and creativity. Southern Columbia took 1st place in speed!
On Tuesday, October 24, 5th Grade students from Mrs. Lupold and Mrs. Toczylousky's classes visited the elementary school to help Mrs. Habowski's 2nd Grade class with their annual Pumpkinology Day. Students worked together to make predictions and complete a number of pumpkin experiments. Pumpkins were picked by 2nd grade students last week on their Fall Fun Field Trip to Rohrbach's Farm.
Congratulations to Sadie Boucher, Kemilyn Hill, Saira Sodergren, and Ben Karnes! These students participated in District Choir auditions this past Sunday at Williamsport High School. They have been practicing since the beginning of the school year and their hard work paid off. You can catch them in concert at Montoursville Area High School from January 24-26.
4th graders in Mr. Rooney's class worked on their monsters for Halloween in Mrs. Brown's art class last week. Additionally, Kindergarten received a visit from High School Spanish students and they made masks for Day of the Dead.

Last week, young scientists in Mrs. Ivey’s 3rd Grade class were brewing up some Halloween magic in the classroom! Using magnets, they conjured tissue ghosts for their Friday STEM project. This hands-on experiment was a delightful mix of science and spookiness, making learning a thrilling adventure.
Our G.C. Hartman Elementary School is constantly being rewarded for their PAWsitive behavior! Third Grade receives Paw Points when students exhibit great qualities of being a leader, team player, and for being respectful to others. Responsible students who go above and beyond, in and out of the classroom, are also rewarded. Once a month, students are able to “cash in” their Paw Points for certain awards from the Paw Points Store.

Art Club members participated in a region-wide window painting contest with Mrs. Roulin yesterday. The event was hosted by The Exchange in Bloomsburg. You can find their paintings at Sean Black's State Farm Insurance Agency, Main Street, Bloomsburg through the end of October. It was a wonderful day for our student artists!

On Friday, October 13, several students competed against Montgomery Area in WVIA's Scholastic Scrimmage. Though they did not triumph over Montgomery, they gained a valuable learning experience and had fun in the process. The team hopes to recruit some younger players in the coming years to bring themselves to victory.
