Third Grader Adalyn Dickey is SCA's Citizen of the Month. She is an all-around wonderful student. She is a hard worker, a great leader, and a sincere friend. Adalyn tries hard to do her best, and she excels in all academic areas. She has an amazing personality, and she brings out the best in her classmates. She is a role model to them, and they look up to her. Adalyn is a kind, considerate, and thoughtful girl who consistently puts the feelings of others first. Adalyn volunteers to help other students with schoolwork or with feeling successful and good about themselves. Adalyn is a well-rounded young girl both in school and outside of school. She gives 110% to her academics and she does it all with a smile. We are very fortunate and proud to have Adalyn in our district.

The Elementary Life Skills class traveled to Rohrbach’s on Friday for their September community-based trip. The students learned the difference between gourds and pumpkins, and they practiced their social skills on the playground.

Congratulations to Ruby Serafini who won 1st place in G.C. Hartman Elementary's Be Kind poster contest in art class! Her artwork will be printed on t-shirts for SCA C.A.R.E.S. Great work, Ruby! We are proud of you!

On Friday, September 29, our Librarian, Mrs. Kane-Gilger, hosted a virtual author visit for students in First and Second Grade. Students met author and New York Times bestselling illustrator Mike Lowery, who spoke to students about his talent in illustrating and his writing process. He read excerpts to students from his book, "Everything Awesome About Dangerous Dinosaurs and Other Prehistoric Beasts." Mike Lowery also led a directed draw for our students. Students followed along and drew characters from some of his recent works. Mike Lowery has worked on dozens of books for children and adults and has lent his talent in illustrating to food trucks, greeting cards, and magazines, in addition to books. Some of his illustration clients include The New York Times, Reader's Digest, Mac World, The Atlanta Braves, Disney, Nick Jr magazine, Hallmark, and Warby Parker. He now travels nationally giving talks about art and books to schools, universities, and bookstores. The Tiger community was thrilled to have the wonderful opportunity to welcome and meet him.

The Southern Columbia Cheerleaders held the 11th annual SCA Youth Cheer Night on Friday, September 22, during the Varsity home football game against the Danville Ironmen. Any students in 1st through 6th Grade were eligible to participate in this event. This year there were 63 youth cheerleaders in attendance. Each Varsity cheerleader was paired with 3-4 youth cheerleaders. The youth cheerleaders were able to perform chants, dances, and cheers on the Tigers’ sideline. They were also given the opportunity to stunt with the Varsity cheerleaders. The cheerleaders had a blast that evening cheering on the Tigers to a victory over Danville. The Southern Columbia Varsity cheerleaders want to thank all the participants and are looking forward to seeing everyone on the sideline again next year!📣🐅

Since the beginning of September, Mrs. Serafini’s 8th Grade classes have been very busy with their American Revolution unit. They learned about many different strategies and people that were involved in the American Revolution through fun games and projects, including capture the flag and studying Washington’s blueprints for shelters in Valley Forge. In the coming weeks, they will be starting their “That’s My Girl!” unit, where they study many of the important women who were involved in the American Revolution. They will also be creating projects about these ‘SHE-ros,’ and holding elections for the ‘Ultimate SHE-ro.’

Last week, the First Graders had a blast participating in Whacky Wednesday for Homecoming Spirit Week. They went all out and had a lot of fun dressing up. The First Graders have also been enjoying their recess at the end of the day. The dome is very exciting for them because it is the first year they are allowed to play on it.

On Tuesday, Miss. Hunter's First Grade class celebrated Johnny Appleseed Day! They did this by tasting three locally grown apples, apple cider, and apple pie. They also learned about the lifecycle of an apple and did writing and math with apples.

First Grade students chose "Craft Teacher" as their monthly SWPBIS reward. Each student came up with their own project and taught the craft to their class.

Students in Mrs. Ziegert’s classroom earned a class reward last week. The students were joined by a guest reader and her pet lizard. Additionally, students have been participating in STEM stations. One of the tasks included building a flying machine that would fly on a zipline. The students' creativity was “sky high.”

School spirit has been running high in the days leading up to Homecoming. Whether it be Country/Country Club Day in the Middle and High School, or Honky Tonk Tuesday or Wacky Wednesday in the Elementary, we've enjoyed seeing the wild and crazy outfits throughout the week. Tomorrow is Flip Flop Day for Middle and High School (students dress as teachers and teachers dress as students) and Fall Sports Friday (wear your black and gold) in the Elementary.

Last week, First Grade took advantage of the beautiful weather and practiced addition on the sidewalk. Additionally, Olivia Meyer chose "Storyteller" as her monthly SWIPBIS reward and read to her First Grade class. The week ended with Hat Day in Mrs. Hower's Third Grade classroom. We can't wait to see what the district has in store for Homecoming Spirit Week this week!
