The Southern Columbia Music Department is incredibly grateful for the recent donation of a beautiful Wurlitzer baby grand piano! We extend our heartfelt thanks to the piano movers, Mrs. Tammy Toczylousky for informing us about the piano, and Ms. Jane Evans for her generous donation. This piano belonged to Ms. Evans' mother, who always encouraged children to engage in the arts. We are deeply thankful, and the instrument has found a wonderful home here at Southern. Thank you to everyone involved for making this possible! 🎹

Yesterday, the Southern Music Department embarked on their annual Broadway trip to NYC! The group, consisting of active members from the choir and band, had the incredible opportunity to see Disney's "Aladdin." What a performance! Experiences like these are truly inspiring for our students. Additionally, they attended a workshop with members of the Broadway production, learning a song and dance from Aladdin. Join the music program to create these kinds of fun memories with us!

The 52nd Annual John Steiner Gold Mathematics Competition was held at Bucknell University on March 12. Mr. Brian Leslie accompanied eight students from SCA to compete against almost 150 students from 22 schools. The 2-hour exam, which prohibits the use of calculators, consisted of 36 challenging questions from many areas of mathematics. The overall mean score of all 151 students was 11 out of 36, while the median score was 8 out of 36; that shows the difficulty level of these questions. The students from Southern Columbia who participated were Makayla Baylor, Joanna Chen, Aiden Eby, Braylon Feese, Josh Knoebel, Austin Shaffer, Mara Turner, and Will Victory. Southern's top scorer was Aiden Eby who received a certificate and a mathematics book as a gift. The 53rd Annual John Steiner Gold Mathematics Competition will be held on March 11th, 2026.

Students in Ag 1 are learning about different components of Food Science. Last week, they learned about the process of fermentation. Students combined yeast, sugar, and hot water together to produce enough carbon dioxide to inflate balloons on their water bottles. The hot water works as an activator for the yeast and the sugar acts as a food source. The food science industry and food production are crucial parts of the agricultural economy in Pennsylvania.Β

Agriculture Science 1 students learned the proper steps to make butter. The students poured heavy cream into jars and shook them until the cream separated into buttermilk and butterfat. After all the shaking, they poured the butterfat into a strainer, pressed all the excess butter through the strainer, and then stored it in small jars. The processing time can vary depending on the person making the butter. Some students took about 4 minutes, while others took about 8-10 minutes to shake until the butter was ready.
