Today some of the SAVE (Students Against Violence Everywhere) members attended the Youth Mental Health Summit at the Lewisburg Campus Theatre. They presented on their violence prevention and mental health awareness work here at Southern. The keynote speaker was recent SCA graduate and inaugural Southern SAVE officer, Sienna Sosnoski. This Summit was organized by the CSIU and offered the opportunity for many local schools to share similar student groups with other districts.
A special thank you to Mr. Aaron Kennedy for donating and installing/tuning new drum heads on our newly donated drum kit. Thank you to Becky Gallup for donating the kit as well. We are so thankful for everything, and we look forward to using the drum kit throughout the future!
Mr. Kennedy, a paraprofessional at the school, has his own company called DRUMMING ACADEMY. He gives drum lessons, so anyone interested in private lessons should reach out to him!
Students in Fifth Grade Science class recently conducted a celery dissection to identify xylem and phloem.
Miss Johnson's class dyed eggs using turmeric, red cabbage, red onion skins, yellow onion skins, red beets, and blueberries. Then the students guessed what colors the eggs would turn out. The reveal was not what was expected! 🐰🐣🥚

Voting is open NOW for the Viewer's Choice award for the Central Susquehanna What's So Cool About Manufacturing? video contest. Voting is open thru 11:59 P.M. on March 28.
The contest videos were created by students from Bloomsburg, Central Columbia, Mount Carmel, Huntingdon, Williamsport and Southern Columbia middle schools and feature the following manufacturers: West Pharmaceutical Services, Bloomsburg Carpet, Gardners Candies, GAF, Great Dane, and Press Enterprise. Two of these teams will move on to the statewide contest in May.
The 2024 Central Susquehanna What’s So Cool About Manufacturing contest is produced by IMC, CSIU, The Foundation of The Columbia Montour Chamber of Commerce, BLaST IU 17 and Advance Central PA.
Students in Mr. Williams' 8th Grade STEM class are continuing with their exploration of robotics. Students are designing and coding Lego robots to complete and solve specific tasks in the classroom. Students are recalling their coding-skills, which have been taught earlier in the year, and combining them with their problem-solving skills in order complete the task at-hand.
The SCA Lady Tigers Basketball team is hosting a "Mother and Son Night of Fun" on Friday, May 10 for Boys in Grades K-5. Please see the attached flyer for more information! 🏀
On March 21, the annual Southern Columbia Pickleball Tournament started. The tournament consists of a boy's bracket made up of 29 teams and a girl's bracket made up of 17 teams. The winning team of each tournament gets a t-shirt with their last name and "Champions" on the back. Stayed tuned for updated results.

Miss Johnson's class visited Tharptown General Store & Pizzeria where her students learned how to make their very own personal pizza. They loved their finished products. Yum! 🍕
Brian Knoebel, Knoebel's Amusement Park, came to share with 3rd Graders at G. C. Hartman Elementary the original deed for a parcel of land purchased from William Penn's son. The deed is 251 years old.

18 SCA students attended the Model United Nations conference at Bloomsburg University. Students represented countries ranging from China to South Africa to discuss modern world issues.
Landon Ferrara and Isaac Carter received a runner-up peer award for their representation of Afghanistan, Wyatt Martin and Guy Longeberger received both a runner-up chair and runner-up peer award for their representation of South Africa, Johnny Barnette and Mason Laubach received the winning peer award for their representation of the Maldives, and Gavin Krebs and Aiden Corrigan received the winning peer award for their representation of China.
Students were accompanied by their advisor, Dr. Long.
9th Grade students attended Ag Day at the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds this morning. This event was sponsored by the Columbia County Farm Bureau. Students met with area businesses and providers who informed students about their agriculture-related careers. Students were also able to ask questions in small group settings, and they enjoyed collecting goodies from some of the stands. 🐄🚜🧑🌾

We are all in this together! Tuesday, March 19, was “Ellymay Day” for the Southern Columbia Area School District. Students and staff were encouraged to show their support for Ellymay Yost as she showcases her bravery and courage during the duration of the next couple months. Students and staff wore purple and blue attire, and some even dyed their hair to show their love for Ellymay. There was also a dress down day for staff and bracelets sold, where all the proceeds went to Ellymay’s family. We wish Ellymay the best of luck and give her all our TIGER LOVE! 🖤🐯💛🖤🐯💛

Let's Recycle! Art students in Mrs. Brown's Fifth Grade class created snowmen using scraps of wood from the Tech Ed department. Snowmen were embellished with their choice of donated fabric scraps, buttons, and polymer clay for the nose. Students topped off their snowmen with a hat, using old socks that they brought from home!
