This week, 7th Grade Life Science students dissected earthworms and learned about the important roles that they play in our ecosystems by fertilizing and aerating soils.
Support S.A.V.E on March 22 by attending the SOCO Spring Showdown, a teachers versus students basketball game fundraiser! Spend the night watching some of your favorite teachers compete on the court. All of the proceeds benefit the annual "Save A Life Walk" hosted by S.A.V.E. The club's main goal is to promote mental health awareness as well as prevent violence in the school district. The tickets are $6 on Hometown Ticketing. JV will begin at 6 pm with Varsity to follow at 7 pm . Come out and show your support for a good cause! Thanks to a grant awarded by the Southern Columbia Community Foundation, the Family and Consumer Sciences department was able to purchase three new simulator babies. The babies are currently being used by students in Mrs. Zysset's Child Development course. Students care for the babies for a 24-hour time period.

The Bloomsburg YMCA is holding an Adaptive Recreation Wellness Program for kids with disabilities ages 3-13. The cost is free! Hand in Hand is also hosting a Summer Camp for students with disabilities to learn how to ride a bike. Please see the flyers for more information! ☀️🚲
Middle School Envirothon students recently assembled and set up a bird feeder station outside of the building. Along with 7th Grade Life Science classes, they will be observing the bird feeders and participating in "Project Feeder Watch" - a research program run by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology that surveys bird populations across North America. Special thanks to the Southern Columbia Community Foundation for awarding the grant to fund this project!
We are exactly 1️⃣ week away from the curtains opening on this year's Encore production. The students have been working tirelessly over the past few months to cultivate a captivating performance for the community.
"Little Shop of Horrors" is a musical comedy about a flower shop assistant named Seymour who cultivates a plant that feeds only on human blood. Mr. Mushnik, the owner of the flower shop and Seymour’s boss, is ready to give up his dreams of having a popular flower shop on the poverty-stricken skid row when he discovers that Seymour’s plant seems to attract new business. As the unusual plant grows, the shops popularity does too, but so does the plants insatiable hunger. Seymour, pressured by both his newfound fame and demanding boss, is forced to find new ways to feed the plant, all while dealing with his ever-growing guilt. 5th Graders recently enjoyed Read Across America Day activities, along with their monthly celebration, which included a Newcomb tournament. Newcomb is a modified volleyball game involving players catching and tossing the ball, instead of hitting it over the net. 📚🏐

Mr. Hynoski, High School Principal, read to the Kindergarten classes on Monday morning for Read Across America week. His son, Hudson, enjoyed having his dad visit.
Last week, Mrs. Long took her 10th Grade American History classes down to the fallout shelter so they could learn more about the precautions taken during times like the Cold War (which took place from 1947 to 1991). Americans were afraid the Soviet Union posed a threat to them, so bomb shelters, like the one underneath Southern Columbia High School, were created. While down there, students got to see original emergency supplies provided by the government to ensure safety and survival in the event of a real bomb threat. Some of the original supplies were water barrels, toilet paper, and sanitary products. The students also watched a video from the 1950’s which taught them how to duck and cover if a bomb threat were to become imminent.

Congratulations to Saira Sodergren as she travels to Valley View High School this week to participate in Region Choir. Out of 40 singers, she placed in the top ten and will get to compete for a spot at States at this week's festival. Best of Luck Saira! We are so proud of you!
What do you call a pig that has a black belt in karate? A porkchop! Owen Knapick completed a research project for his 3rd Grade computer class. Students had to choose an animal and design a poster with facts about it. Owen chose to select the pig species as his animal. Ironically, March 1st is National Pig Day! To honor this incredible holiday, Owen presented his project to Mrs. Spotts’s 3rd Grade class and Ms. Joanna and Miss Sara’s Pre-K class. The classes had a PIG-tastic time learning all about pigs! 🐖🐷🐽

Hot Air Balloons are starting to arrive in the library!
Inspired by the Dr. Seuss book, "Oh the Places You'll Go," and to celebrate Dr. Seuss's birthday, your child is invited to make him a hot air balloon/balloon centerpiece display! Grades 1 through 4 are encouraged to participate. Kindergarten students are invited to make Dr. Seuss a non-edible, no food birthday cake. The balloons and cakes will be collected throughout next week. Friday, March 8 will be the last day of submission. Winners will receive a $10.00 gift voucher to use at the spring book fair in May.
