Recently, 8th graders participated in an engineering challenge in Science class where they were tasked with building a prototype of a rubber band powered Mars rover. Then they applied the engineering process (design --> revise --> perfect) to identify weaknesses in the basic prototype and make design changes that would improve its performance. They were restricted to certain materials and had to stay within design constraints that limited their rovers to no more than 12 inches in any dimension and no more than 75 grams. After reengineering their vehicles, they competed to see which team's rover could travel the furthest across our simulated rugged Mars terrain.
Over the weekend, three Senior members of S.A.V.E. (Students Against Violence Everywhere) used the funds raised during the annual Quarter Wars Challenge to deliver packaged detergent pods and dryer sheets to local laundromats for customers to use free of charge.
Additionally, members of the Peer Leadership program attended a S.A.V.E. leadership conference in Harrisburg last week to learn more about preventing social isolation and bullying here at Southern.
FBLA members Gracie Keller, Anesa Brown, and Elizabeth Hodder led a donation drive for the Bloomsburg Women's Center. The partnership was generated by Amanda Strocko, FBLA president. Students throughout the high school donated cleaning and hygiene items. Over 100 donations will be provided to the Center.
For "Thankful Thursday," Mr. Williams expressed thankfulness for Mr. Hynoski's return to SCA as our principal.

Last night, the SCA Varsity Club brought back the Powderpuff Game for the first time since 2019. In a defensive battle, Let There Be Light (Pink) defeated Lights Out (Black) 6-0 behind a Kennadie Reamer TD with 12 seconds left! Jillian Kehler had an interception at the goal line and took it 70 yards to set up the winning TD. Ella Podgurski had 2 interceptions for Lights Out.
In celebration of Thanksgiving Spirit Week and today's "Football Friday" theme in the high school, Skylar Riffindifil sported Mr. Hynoski's college jersey. Mr. Williams was found sporting Mr. Hynoski's NFL jersey on "Thankful Thursday."
6th Grade STEM students made slingshot cars out of popsicle sticks. The slingshot car is an excellent introductory project to illustrate how potential energy is converted into kinetic energy while highlighting the importance of low friction.
Mrs. Hower's Third Grade class wore t-shirts expressing what they are thankful for, and students in Miss Merook's Second Grade class created a turkey and added feathers with a list of the items for which they are most thankful. Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃🍂

With a determined look in his eye and his workout sneakers laced up tight, Southern Columbia’s Mr. Hazlett helped hundreds of area families put food on their tables. After purchasing a ticket from Senior cheerleader MolliLyn Petro, he was surprised to learn that he won the Grand Prize: a 5 minute Supermarket Shopping Spree at Boyer’s in Mount Carmel. It didn’t take more than a moment for him to decide to use his victory to help others. Hazlett’s giving spirit is now inspiring others! SCA’s Varsity Cheerleaders and Football team are continuing to collect donations for area food banks in all of the school offices. All of the donations collected from Mr. Hazlett and the Varsity Cheerleaders and Football Team will be donated to the local food pantry. Mr. Hazlett is a kind and generous person who always thinks of others. He is a great example of the SoCo spirit and values. Thank you, Mr. Hazlett, for your service and your heart!
